MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Robin Nichinsky will seek reelection to the Mamaroneck Board of Education, along with newcomers Melany Gray and Roger Martin on May 15.
All three candidates were nominated by the School Board Selection Committee, an independent volunteer group that screens and endorses candidates for the board. There are three positions on the ballot.
Gray, a Larchmont resident with two sons, and Martin, a Mamaroneck resident with two grown daughters, will seek to fill the two seats left vacant by Linnet Tse and Anant Nambiar, who decided not to run for re-election. Nichinsky, the sitting president of the board, will seek her third three-year term.
"The committee considered a large number of interested applicants this year, before finally endorsing Ms. Gray and Mr. Martin, and Ms. Nichinsky," said Freida Kraft, co-chair of the selection committee.
School board members, who are elected to three-year terms, work with the superintendent of schools to develop district goals, adopt the annual budget, determine timing and sizing of bonds and work on the capital plan, among other duties, according to the committee.
Nichinsky is currently working with the board and Dr. Robert Shaps, superintendent of schools, on the 2012-13 budget, which includes a $9.5 million bond referendum for a capitol project -- she explains it in a brief video here. Nichinsky has also participated in a national superintendent search and collective bargaining negotiations during her tenure, the committee said.
Gray, a part-time associate attorney for Collazo, Florentino & Keil in New York City, has been president of the Central and Hommocks PTAs, the Mamaroneck High School PTSA and the PT Council, the committee said. She earned her bachelor of science. from the University of North Carolina, and her juris doctor from St. John's University School of Law.
Martin was President of both Moravian College (1986 to 1997) and Randolph-Macon College (1997 to 2006), and associate dean of Harvard Divinity School, the committee said. He wrote Racing Odysseus: A College President Becomes a Freshman Again. Martin holds bachelors degrees from Drew University and Yale University and the doctor of philosophy from Oxford.
