MAMARONECK, N.Y. The French-American School will not be using its administrative offices at 525 Fenimore Road as temporary classrooms this September.
By the time the Village of Mamaroneck passed proper zoning for the space, it was too late to open enrollment and to complete construction by the first day of classes.
It makes no sense to refurbish the space if enrollment isnt there, Patrick Croze, director of finance and operations for the French-American School, said.
Grades 6 thru 12 are at the 145 New Street campus. The school has increasing numbers of students enrolling in its program, but the current space forces them to cap that number at 380.
Administrators wanted to use the Feminore Road building as classrooms for 11th- and 12th- graders, until the new campus is completed in White Plains, allowing for an extra 120 students to be admitted into the program.
The village has been cooperative, said Croze.
The village told the school officials they would be allowed to temporarily use the space as long as they completed construction to fit zoning regulations before classes began. But, the decision came too late for this year, not until July 16, and the school did not have enough time to open enrollment and complete construction by September. However, Croze said they will probably be able to use the space starting next school year.
It might happen, and it might not, he said. It depends on enrollment.
In January 2011, the private school purchased 129-acres of property in White Plains in for $11 million. The school hopes to bring all 870 students from its three schools in Mamaroneck, Larchmont and Scarsdale to one campus. The project could take years to be completed.
