This week's student is Alexa Barrett.
Probably most notable is Barrett's appreciation for Mamaroneck High School, now her alma mater.
“I’m incredibly thankful that I was able to go to a school that nurtured creativity and individuality so deeply," said Barrett. "I don’t believe I would have tapped into as many of my true passions or pushed myself nearly as hard as I did if I hadn’t gone to a school that valued the success of its students the way MHS does. I will always be thankful for the support of the staff and the opportunities I was given throughout my four years here." Barrett fell in love with U.S. history her junior year. She says the class she took with Mr. Goldberg changed her life.
“Nearly every class was an entirely student-run debate or discussion; Mr. Goldberg challenged us to find the answers to big questions out for ourselves, instead of spoon-feeding them to us,” Barrett said.
She will attend Brown University in the fall, although she’s not sure yet what she will major in. Barrett says her four years working on the MAHISCAN, the MHS yearbook, staff was her most valuable experience outside of her academics. Each year, she worked on a different section of the yearbook and became editor-in-chief. The student newspaper The Globe was another activity that occupied Barrett’s time. Everyone needs a little encouragement at times. For Barrett, that person was Carol Scheffler, MHS’ coordinator of student affairs.
“Carol had an enormous influence on my pushing myself to pursue leadership positions and face new challenges in the school community," said Barrett.
