Rodriguez will replace Michael Mercanti-Anthony, who was named interim assistant director of Special Education for the district in March.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Ms. Rodriguez to the Mamaroneck Schools family,” Schools Superintendent Robert Shaps said in making the recommendation to the board. “Jenny comes to Mamaroneck with more than 20 years as an educator in a variety of settings. The search committee, led by Principal Elizabeth Clain and consisting of parents, faculty and students, enthusiastically supported Ms. Rodriguez’s appointment, and we are confident she will be a wonderful addition to our administrator staff.”
Rodriquez spent the last seven years as instructional leader and assistant principal at Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School (WHEELS) in New York City. She provided professional development, coaching and observation for teachers and worked to ensure that 400 students were not only on track to graduate, but accepted to their colleges of choice. WHEELS opened its doors in 2006, and, since graduating its first senior class in 2012, 100 percent of its graduates have been accepted to two and four year colleges.
“My focus is on high standards for students, parents, and teachers,” says Rodriguez. “Most importantly, I consider myself a strategic problem solver, with the never-ending goal of strengthening school culture, student motivation and academic achievement.” Rodriguez began her career as a Spanish teacher through Teach for America, immediately upon graduating from Syracuse University.
Rodriguez also has extensive experience in college counseling. While at Bronx Preparatory Charter School, Rodriguez served as a senior college counselor. Rodriguez speaks fluent Spanish and lives with her family in New Rochelle. She received her undergraduate degree in International Relations and Spanish Language Literature and Culture and master's degrees in comparative international education from Teacher’s College at Columbia University, and in school building leadership from Mercy College.
