Larchmont, Mamaroneck school vote set for Tuesday

MAMARONECK, N.Y. — Voters in Larchmont and Mamaroneck will head to the polls Tuesday to elect two school board members and decide on a $124.3 million budget for the 2012-13 school year and a $9.5 million municipal bond issue for capital projects.

Polls will be open at the district’s four elementary schools from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Four candidates are running for three spots on the Board of Education. Board President Robin Nichinsky is hoping to hold on to her seat for a third three-year term, while Victor Gatti , Melany Gray and Roger Martin are seeking to fill the two seats left vacant by outgoing board members Linnet Tse and Anant Nambiar.

Gray, Martin and Nichinksy have been endorsed by the Committee for the Selection of School Board Nominees, while Gatti is running as an Independent.

Voters will also decide on two proposals: the board-recommended budget of about $124.3 million for the next school year and a $9.5 million health, safety and structural repair municipal bond issue. These two proposals are separate and can be approved or rejected independently of one another.

The school budget is about $1 million, or .82 percent, less than last year’s, due to cost-cutting measures including outsourcing transportation, restructuring the IT department and centralizing printing efforts, Nichinsky said.

If the bond issue is approved, the owner of a property with an assessed value of $20,000 (or $1 million market value) would pay $7.45 more in property taxes through the 2015-16 school year. The district has a favorable AAA rating, which is expected to secure an interest rate of approximately 3.5 percent on the bonds, based on what similarly rated New York districts are receiving in the market today.
