Mamaroneck College Student Helps Organize School Supply Drive

MAMARONECK, N.Y.–- Gabriela Monroy, a senior from Mamaroneck, was among the Mount St. Mary College volunteers helping youngsters start the new school year by donating 50 book bags filled with essential school supplies.

The college’s Office of Alumni Affairs and the Office of Student Activities sponsored the Back to School Supply Drive for the Newburgh Armory Unity Center.

The center serves the needs of the city of Newburgh and the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. 

Mount St Mary students, faculty, staff and alumni contributed to the drive. .

Michelle Lacuessa, director of Alumni Affairs and Advancement Events, and about 10 student volunteers, stuffed the book bags with pencils, erasers, spiral notebooks, binders, small pencil sharpeners, pens, crayon packs, glue sticks and more before dropping them off at the Newburgh Armory on Sept. 4. 

“We’re all so excited about this,” said Monroy, a senior majoring in human services. 

"We think it’s a great idea and we hope it helps out a lot of families," she said.
