Mamaroneck Launches Hour Of Code Week With Workshops

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Villages of Mamaroneck and Larchmont as well as the Town of Mamaroneck are authoring resolutions recognizing the “Hour of Code: Computer Science Education Week” lasting from Dec. 8 to Dec.14.

MHS students take their coding lessons into the hallways thanks to the iPad initiative which gives all kids equal footing in creating new innovations as well as using technology to learn.

MHS students take their coding lessons into the hallways thanks to the iPad initiative which gives all kids equal footing in creating new innovations as well as using technology to learn.

Code.org, which runs this initiative, intends to have 100 million youth worldwide spend at least one hour learning how to code.

Lee Wexler, a STEM Alliance member, will lead the Larchmont Public Library Hour of Code Workshop on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. for children in grades six to 12. Registration is required. Call 914-834-2281. The Mamaroneck Public Library Hour of Code Workshop will take place on Thursday, Dec. 11from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for children in grades five to 12. Registration is required and limited to 10 students. To register, Contact Ellen McTyre at 914-630-5875.

“Once kids see that they can actually use coding to change things that matter to them – from building a website to hacking your phone apps – they move to coder and innovator quickly,” said Jigar Jadav, Computer Science teacher at Mamaroneck High School.  

Following December, the Mamaroneck High School plans to expand after-school offerings involving code.

This technology can be applied by users as young as children in kindergarten age through Scratch programming.
