MAMARONECK, N.Y. – There will be an increased police presence in and around Mamaroneck and Rye Neck schools in response to the Newtown, Conn. school shooting on Friday that killed 20 first-graders and six adults, said Detective Sandra DiRuzza of the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department on Monday.

The central administration for the Mamaroneck School District was present at all six of its schools Monday morning to prepare faculty to address parent and student concerns.

Similarly, Rye Neck schools held faculty meetings before school Monday to review its safety protocols and counseling plans.

“I was at the elementary school this morning and staff was ready to address parents’ concerns and needs, and really that’s our focus,” said Peter Mustich, superintendent of Rye Neck schools. “Movie theatres, malls, schools, nothing is safe anymore. It’s disconcerting when people get that feeling.”

Mamaroneck High School and Middle School began the day with a video message from their respective principals, followed by normal instruction.

“The focus has been on helping to make children feel safe and allaying their fears,” Robert Shaps, superintendent of Mamaroneck schools, wrote in email sent out to parents Monday.

The school administration began reviewing its security measures to determine what adjustments may need to be made.

“We will continue to work with the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Police and Fire Departments to make sure that our plans are as seamless and thorough as possible,” Shaps wrote in the email. “Events like this remind us why we need to go to such lengths.  Over the period of the next several weeks, we will work with our safety experts to make recommendations to the Board of Education about possible security improvements.”
