Mamaroneck, Rye Neck Students Score Above County

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Standardized test results from the state of New York came back above Westchester County averages for third- through eighth-graders in both the Mamaroneck and Rye Neck school districts.

“We are still in the process of reviewing all of the data, but from what I do know it is good news all around,” said Debbie Manetta, public relations director for the Mamaroneck Union Free School District.

Students’ test scores fall into one of four categories. The first two indicate a student is below proficiency. A student at level three meets the proficiency standard, while a student at level four exceeds it.

Mamaroneck had 81.48 percent of third- through eighth-graders score at or above the proficiency standard on the English language arts tests, placing the district 15.52 percentage point higher than the county average. English scores increased from last year’s 78.7 percent of Mamaroneck students meeting or exceeding the proficiency standard.

“Our math and ELA scores are improving all around, and we look forward to sharing the results with the community shortly,” Manetta said. “Good news all around. We are very happy.”

In math, 81.08 percent of the third- through eighth-graders were at or above the proficiency standard, 16.08 percentage points higher than the county average. More Mamaroneck students exceeded the standard in math, 50.38 percent, than met the standard, 38.7 percent. Last year’s math scores were higher, with 84.7 percent of students meeting or exceeding the proficiency standard.

The Rye Neck Union Free School District had 81.03 percent of third- through eighth-graders place at or above the proficiency standard on the English tests, 15.07 percentage points higher than the county average.

Rye Neck had 85.08 percent of its students at or above the proficiency standard in math, which is 12.08 percentage points higher than the county average. More students exceeded the standard in math, 52.52 percent, than met the standard, 32.75 percent. Last year 87.4 percent of students reached or exceeded the proficiency standard in math, which means the district is down 2.32 percentage points from last year’s math scores.

In all of Westchester County 65.96 percent of the third- through eighth-graders scored at or above the proficiency standard on the English tests, and 73 percent scored at or above the proficiency standard on the math tests.

Last year the county average of English scores at or above proficiency was 64 percent, and math scores were 70.1 percent. The percentage of students scoring at or above proficiency in English increased this year by 1.96 percentage points, and in math it increased by 2.9 percentage points.

The test results are available in a variety of formats on the state Education Department website .
