LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- Margo Schneider placed first among paintings at a reception Wednesday for the Mamaroneck Artists Guild's "Young Artists on the Rise" exhibit, featuring students from three area high schools.
The Mamaroneck Artists Guild awarded 23 students in all with first place, second place, third place or an honorable mention in six different categories: painting, sculpture, mixed media, drawing, photography/digital/graphics and ceramics.
Before the reception, Schneider, a senior at Mamaroneck High School, brought her father to the gallery to see her work on display, and received a pleasant surprise.
"I brought my dad here on Saturday to the show and I saw my painting in the window with a ribbon," said Schneider, who titled her award-winning acrylic painting "Still Life.
Along with Mamaroneck High School, New Rochelle High School and the French American School in Mamaroneck were represented. The art teachers from each school selected 25 of their students' pieces for the show, which has featured Mamaroneck students for nearly 20 years.
Like Schneider, this is the second year Emily Mancuso's work has been selected for the show. The junior's untitled charcoal drawing depicts a still life, and was awarded second place in the drawing category.
Luna Slater, who painted a self-portrait in black and white acrylics, was excited to have her work displayed in the local gallery to expose her work to the larger community.
"It makes you feel like you've accomplished something," Slater said.
Although Slater isn't picking out colleges just yet, she would like to attend an art school in New York City and pursue a creative field, such as art or music. The junior also plays the base and is in the planning stages of starting an art magazine with her friends at school.
The show also featured students like Cassandre Brana, 16, from the French American School, and Madeline Slade, 17, from the New Rochelle High School.
"I love working with pen and pencil, and I love cartooning," said Slade, whose favorite movie is a Japanese animated film titled "Spirited Away. "I want to be a graphic novelist, and I've always been a sucker for cartoons and comics."
Mamaroneck High School's AP art students have a concentration show Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Palmer Gallery. Schneider has six pieces featured in it.
