Kelly and a group of airman were stationed at Ground Zero for about a month and received peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and thank you notes from the grateful students.
On the 13th anniversary of 9/11, Kelly still remembers the kind words from the students and how much it meant to him and his group.
“Many years have passed; most of us that were there have since retired from military life and moved on. As I watch the memorial service this morning, I felt compelled to just send a note to let anyone at your school that your schools' efforts have not been forgotten either and I will always be grateful for what the staff and students did for us. Please pass along to your staff that this random act of kindness has never been forgotten.”
Ms. Saul was also remembering that day and felt compelled to give thanks to those students for their care package and positive thoughts.
“It has been 13 years since September 11, 2001. You were all in my third-grade class happily reading, writing and working away. On a beautiful Tuesday morning life for all of us changed. That morning many of your parents began trickling into our classroom, room 309, gathering you in their arms and wanting to never let go. Many of your parents, after just a few days of having met me, offered their home, food and clothes since I was unable to go back to my home in Manhattan that night. That day bonded us in a very unique way forever,” wrote Ms. Saul.
"My dear students, your love and dedication never went unnoticed. Today a letter from Sergeant Kelly was received and he remembers what you did for him and the other workers at Ground Zero. Life is interesting. A simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a heartfelt note can impact a life. I am so proud of you all and hope that you take a moment to remember how we came together on that dreadful day and gave solace to others.”
