MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Students for Senegal, a Mamaroneck High School club dedicated to helping educate children in Lambaye, Senegal, will hold its fifth annual fundraising benefit, SeneGALA, at Bonnie Briar Country Club from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Wednesday.

Students for Senegal was founded in 2010 by students in Amary Seck’s chemistry class after listening to his stories of the challenges faced by schoolchildren in his home village of Lambaye. The club began by sending books, school supplies, soccer equipment and other donations to the village.

In February 2011, a student group visited Lambaye to bring supplies and work with the children. After spending time in the village and meeting with the village elders, the students decided that a learning center and library were needed and directed their fundraising efforts to that goal.

In 2013, a second group of students visited Senegal along with members of BKSK architects, and the design and location for the learning center were determined.

According to Greer Thelander, Students for Senegal co-president who traveled to Senegal in 2013, “Seeing the lack of accessible learning tools firsthand enabled me to better understand what they needed and how we could help.”

Students for Senegal has raised nearly $80,000 to date. The goal of the gala is to raise an additional $40,000 so construction can begin.

According to Co-President Ben Steinberger, “The gala will feature a buffet dinner, live Senegalese music and live and silent auctions. We have great prizes, including Taylor Swift, Yankees, Knicks and Ranger tickets; jewelry; vacation homes; and more. We hope the community will join us for this fun evening to help the children of Lambaye. We are grateful to our sponsors, Houlihan Lawrence, Sorbabes and Acura of Westchester for their support.”

Tickets to SeneGALA are $60 in advance and $65 at the door. To purchase tickets, learn more about the gala and detailed plans for the learning center, visit www.studentsforsenegal.org .
