MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Voters in the Mamaroneck and Rye Neck school districts have, according to unofficial results, approved budgets for the 2016-2017 school year.

Rye Neck's proposed $40.4 million school budget for next year passed by an unofficial vote of 554 to 138. The approved spending plan for 2016-17 will increase by about 1.8 percent over the current school year.

Mamaroneck Union Free School District's unofficial vote count showed 1,078 votes, or about 85 percent of all ballots cast Tuesday, were in favor of the $133 million budget. Those remaining voters -- totaling 197 -- rejected the spending plan.

“I’m pleased that we are able to continually strengthen our educational programs, while keeping our budget increases to a minimum year-to-year; for ‘16-’17," said Robert Shaps, Mamaroneck superintendent of schools. "In fact, we lowered our budget by nearly 3/4 of a million dollars."
