Mamaroneck's AP Students Create Political Documentary

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – A group of civics students from Mamaroneck High School got a real-life lesson in politics when they immersed themselves in the Republican presidential primary during a field trip in January to Manchester, N.H.

“On one hand, it was to get them excited about politics and expose them to the candidates first hand,” said Joe Liberti , the AP American politics and government teacher. “On the other hand, we wanted them to see things we learn in the classroom in action and begin to put them together.”

The students took the lesson a step further by creating a documentary about their experiences. The school’s McLain Auditorium will open its doors to the public at 7 p.m. Friday for a showing of the documentary, "Mamaroneck to Manchester." The students made it with their video teacher, Emily Dombroff.

“The video was shot in high-definition and features a wonderful soundtrack and various interviews,” said Liberti. “It’s really an amazing piece of work.”

In New Hampshire, students helped at phone banks, attended political rallies, marched with placards and met presidential candidates.

“I feel definitely feel more tuned in now,” said Lily Goldstein, a senior. “Knowing that there are real people behind the elections just connects me a little bit more.”

The school held a private showing of the documentary for students and parents, with a great turnout. This time, the school is hoping more students, extended family and the community attend.

“To me, this is a large celebration of an amazing experience,” said Liberti. “I’m hoping for a good turnout.”

He plans to continue with work outside the classroom with the fall elections and said parents are already asking about a trip during the 2016 primaries. He said the students' experiences outside of the classroom are priceless.

“Really getting to see politics in action was amazing,” said Goldstein. “You see it on TV and in magazines, but it doesn’t compare at all to the real thing.”
