Mamaroneck Superintendent of Schools Robert Shaps will recommend the appointment of Hindley at the next Board of Education meeting. Hindley has been assistant principal at Central School since 2009. Hindley replaces Principal Carol Priore and comes to the position with many years of experience as a classroom teacher, an assistant principal, a national literacy consultant and a published author, according to a press release.
“I feel extremely fortunate for the many positions I’ve held in the field of education and look forward to bringing these multiple lenses to the role of principal,” Hindley said. “I’m thrilled to continue my involvement with the wonderful Central School staff, the students and their families, as we work together to ensure that each child reaches his/her full academic and social potential.”
Prior to her tenure at Central School, Hindley was a staff developer on literacy curriculum for grades K-6, responsible for teaching theoretical and practical writing and reading strategies.
"She provided her expertise to numerous school districts and institutions across the country," representatives said in the release. "She also served as an elementary school teacher at the Manhattan New School in NY and Public School 138 in the Bronx, as well as staff developer and co-leader of the Teachers College Writing Project at Columbia University. Hindley has had numerous professional texts published, including In the Company of Children, a book about her third grade classroom that offers suggestions for creating rigorous, efficient, and successful reading and writing workshops."
Shaps praised Hindley.
“Joanne’s clear understanding of the Central School community, combined with her experience at the national level leading literacy practice and her emphasis on supporting educators’ growth for the purpose of helping students learn will enable her to embrace her new role as principal,” said Shaps, who will recommend Hindley following the "extensive search process conducted by a search committee consisting of parents, teachers and administrators," according to the release.
Hindley, who will assume the principal position effective July 1, lives in Scarsdale with her husband, Jack, and son, Dylan.
