New Rochelle Student Suggestion On Smoke, Vape Shops Becomes Law

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - A members of the New Rochelle Boys and Girls Club has proven there’s no age too young to get involved in local policy making.

Smoke shops will not be permitted within 500-feet of where children congregate in New Rocehlle.

At the behest of one of the city’s youngest, and brightest students, smoke and vape shops looking to set up shop in New Rochelle will no longer be permitted in the vicinity of schools, playgrounds, daycares and other youth facilities.

Each year, members of the Boys and Girls Club take a trip to New Rochelle City Hall, where they get to play the role of officials for a day, proposing new laws, rules and regulations that don’t often make it much further than that.

Following the suggestion of one of the Club’s members, legislation has been passed by the New Rochelle City Council that will prohibit vape and tobacco stores from opening within 500 feet near areas where children congregate. The law won’t apply to current businesses, which will be grandfathered in, but will affect business owners hoping of taking their shops into the city.

“The kids’ suggestions are always interesting, thoughtful and fun, but usually not exactly the right fit for municipal policy making, and so these suggestions have never been formally adopted into law,” New Rochelle Mayor Noam Bramson noted. “Until this year.”
