NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Thousands of dollars in school supplies were reportedly stolen from a New Rochelle charity planning to give them to children in need.

Officials confirmed that an estimated $10,000 worth of donated supplies were stolen from Hope Community Services during an overnight break-in earlier this week, leaving them potentially short on items for their annual backpack giveaway that had been scheduled for this weekend, before school starts.

The theft was first reported by CBS on Wednesday. Police are currently investigating the incident.

In total, more than 200 backpacks that were already chock full of supplies - including notebooks, folders, pen, paper, calculators and other standard school supplies - that were to help hundreds of children were taken.

Despite the thievery, the backpack giveaway, hosted by Yankee legend Mariano Rivera is still scheduled for Saturday afternoon at New Rochelle City Hall.

Donations are still being accepted for school supplies for children up to grade five. They can be dropped off at Hope Community Services at 50 Washington Ave. Donations can also be made online .
