Laura was selected for her essay on one of the topics relating to the book “I am Malala." The essay describes Laura's relationship with a mentor named Carlos, who has inspired her to succeed in school and to help others. Laura wrote “Carlos’ selfless desire to devote his time to benefit others – whether it is becoming an educator or acting as my mentor – serves as a reminder to be the best person I can be."
Elisabeth Radow, speaking on behalf of the League of Women Voters, presented Laura with a $50 check. Radow thanked Laura for her participation in the contest and noted that her essay embodied the spirit of Malala’s relationship with her father.
The “One Book, One Mamaroneck” series of programs during October was based on the book “I am Malala” by Malala Yousafzai. The programs included multiple presentations, book discussion groups, an essay contest and other events, which were attended by more than 1,000 people. The project was the brainchild of library directors Susan Riley, from the Mamaroneck Public Library, and Laura Eckley, from the Larchmont Public Library. The group plans to hold another community read during March 2016.
