MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Jakob Calvini has had little difficulty making the transition from tight end to running back this season for the Rye Neck varsity football team.
The 6-foot 180-pound junior has been instrumental in the Panthers 2-0 start, rushing for 198 yards and two touchdowns. He amassed 121 yards on only six carries in a victory against Palisades Prep Saturday. He also collected six tackles from his defensive end position.
Calvini knew last spring that Rye Neck coach Nick Ianello was moving him to running back, a position he was familiar with.
I have a background playing running back. I played running back on modified so that helped me with the transition. It was not an incredibly difficult transition. After a few weeks of camp, I made the adjustment," Calvini said. It feels good being back at running back but if I was still playing tight end I would have had no problem with it.
Calvini also returned for preseason with an additional 15 pounds of muscle.
Jakob has really applied himself getting to that next level, Ianello said. His dedication in the weight room has been a main reason in him getting to the next level. He pushes himself in the weight room and keeps getting better and better each week.
Calvini spent eight weeks last summer at Purchase College in the Lift program.
It was Monday through Thursday and you would run for 90 minutes and you would lift for 90 minutes, Calvini said. One of our coaches, Matt Wertz, was a counselor. I didnt go last summer so I was really excited about going back and working really hard.
I was 165 at the end of last year. Being an underclassman the last two years, I felt I was getting pushed around a little. I definitely feel a lot better being able to hold my ground against my opponent.
Calvini and his teammates have taken it to their first two opponents based on a couple of factors.
From the team to the coaching staff, everybody has been doing a great job, Calvini said. It has been a total team effort.
