MAMARONECK, N.Y. Mamaroneck opened the varsity football season Monday with a new starting quarterback and halfback, but one would know by their respective performances.
Senior quarterback Danny McCarthy threw three touchdowns passes and sophomore halfback Marquez Jackson-Allen rushed for 84 yards and a score in Mamaronecks 28-7 season-opening win over Suffern.
McCarthy, who replaced Parker Thelander, and Jackson-Allen, who replace Brett Poniros, were making their first varsity starts.
I was thrilled for Danny because he has been waiting in the wings behind a three-year starter and didnt disappoint in his first start, Mamaroneck coach Anthony Vitti said. He played within himself, used his feet to avoid pressure and kept control of his huddle. I imagine this was a great confidence builder for Danny.
McCarthy threw scoring strikes of 40 yards to Will Giddon, 11 yards to Mat Marino and 19 yards to Alex Parkinson.
Jackson-Allen, who only had 11 carries and scored in the fourth quarter, is also the starting middle linebacker.
Marquez plays the game in a physical fashion, Vitti said. He has a low center of gravity and brings the hammer when he hits the hole. One coach remarked he only begins to run after first contact. He had a good camp, learned the offense quickly and already is a key contributor to this program.
