MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Following her sophomore year, Mamaroneck’s Hannah Fitzgerald dedicated herself to field hockey.
“I wanted to become more involved, so I began doing the extra work with my high school team, playing Futures and joining the Hudson Valley club team last year,” said Fitzgerald, a senior.
Fitzgerald closed out her career with a superb year, scoring 15 goals and collecting 21 assists, leading Mamaroneck back to the Section 1 Class A field hockey final. Fitzgerald was selected Section 1 all-elite, all-state and is The Mamaroneck Daily Voice Student-Athlete of the Month.
“Playing in the offseason and going to tournaments helped me to improve my game because I wanted to be a better player for the next season,” said Fitzgerald, who plans on playing in college.
Fitzgerald was known for her dashes down right wing, dodging defenders. She would either carry the ball into the circle for a shot or, while still running full speed, rip a drive pass from the wing into the circle to set up a teammate.
“On the field, opponents were double and triple-teaming her, but despite the defensive pressure Hannah was able to deliver the ball to her teammates to score,” Mamaroneck coach John Savage said. “Her 21 assists led the team and her 15 goals, an amazing number for a right wing, was second. During corners, Hannah’s drive accounted for many scores.”
Savage said Fitzgerald’s all-around game was unnoticed because of her offensive fireworks. Fitzgerald, a forward, was Mamaroneck’s flyer on penalty corners.
“Hannah is among the best all-around players I have ever coached,” Savage said. “She is an excellent 1v1 defender and is able to mark players with her quickness and speed. Her defensive stickwork is flawless and she has the uncanny ability to recover and double-team opponents.”
Even though Mamaroneck was upset by Suffern in the Section 1 Class A final, Fitzgerald said its does not take away from the Tigers’ great season.
“We put our all on the field and in our games and I am proud of our team for taking it that far,” Fitzgerald said.
