MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Following a junior year in which Trey Herlitz-Ferguson tallied 14 points, the Mamaroneck varsity hockey player spent the offseason determined to become a more effective player.

The off-season workout has resulted in Herlitz-Ferguson having an outstanding senior year for the Tigers. Herlitz-Ferguson continued his explosive senior year with a six-point performance Tuesday as No. 3 Mamaroneck overwhelmed No. 6 Ryetown/Harrison, 9-0, in a Section 1 Division 1 Hockey Championship semifinal at Hommocks Ice Rink.

Mamaroneck will host No. 7 Lakeland/Panas in a semifinal at 7:45 p.m. Thursday. The Rebels upset second-seeded Somers/North Salem. The other semi has top-seeded Suffern hosting fifth-seeded New Rochelle.’

Herlitz-Ferguson now has 28 goals and 12 assists, good for a team-leading 40 points. He said he worked on his strength and also focused on his stride, especially during the summer.

“I feel that my strength is 100 times better,” said Herlitz-Ferguson, who received a big, congratulatory hug from his father following the game. “I worked on my stride because last year I felt I was only using a one-quarter of my legs. Now, I am using all of my legs.”

Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli is not surprised in Herlitz-Ferguson raising his game to another level this year.

“Trey trained hard all summer,” Chiapparelli said. “And he took the whole team with him. Last year, Trey had four goals and 10 assists. Trey has made himself a much stronger and faster player. I have the utmost respect for what he has done.

“This year, Trey has been dominant, at times. I think this is his fourth game with four goals this year.”

Herlitz-Ferguson has grown up playing hockey at Hommocks, first putting on the pads as a 5 year old. The thought of playing his final home game Tuesday gave Herlitz-Ferguson added incentive.

As a result of his performance, Herlitz-Ferguson and his classmates will play one final time at Hommocks with a berth in the Section 1 Division 1 final on the line.

Mamaroneck felt it played one of  its finest games of the season and plan on continuing it Thursday.

“We were really moving the puck well tonight,” Herlitz-Ferguson said. “We were also getting the puck deep. Everything clicked for us.”

Ted Bellis had two goals and an assist and Robert Morris collected four assists yo also pace the offense.
