LARCHMONT, N.Y. -- If Connor Aylett becomes a major tennis star when he grows up, he'll be able to trace his athletic roots to Larchmont.

Aylett, an 11-year-old from Larchmont who attends Hommocks Middle School, quickly is on his way to success, snagging several championship titles.

He happily can rattle off a list of his accomplishments, including winning the Boys 12 and Under L1 Cedarbrook August Championship in singles and doubles, and the L1 Fairview August Championship this year in singles.

He currently is ranked number 29 on the USTA Eastern Junior Rankings and his record is 42-30.

Aylett plays tennis at Kela Tennis Club, however, he first picked up the racket at the age of 6.

"One day, he told me he wanted to take tennis lessons," his mother Liz Aylett said, "I said 'really?' I ended up taking him to the town recreational tennis courts, and he really loved it so then we enrolled him for lessons."

Connor told the The Daily Voice: "I like tennis a lot because you're by yourself on the court - you're in charge of yourself. It's up to you what you do. I like to be in charge."

Connor hopes to play tennis professionally, and his mother has no problem with it, as long as he keeps his grades up.

"I love it because it gives him something to focus on other than school. It gives him his own outlet and a place to go that is safe all the time," she said, "The greatest thing about tennis is that it teaches humility. No matter how good you are, there is someone better than you. It's good to learn to lose. We give out participation medals nowadays, and it doesn't teach humility."

When Connor isn't playing tennis, he's indulging in his true passion of fantasy football, or playing with his 9-year-old sister.
