Larchmont Swim Team Stays Cool At Conference Meet

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Larchmont Yacht Club coach Brian Lyons and his swimmers arrived at the Orienta Beach Club at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday for the third and final qualifying day of the Westchester County Swim Conference Championships.

He had to put the time system in at the event, but the early arrival had one advantage. The team found a nice shady spot under a tree close to the pool.

“It’s usually hot on days like this, so we try to find just a tree to sit underneath and have the kids just rest and sit down so they don’t overtire themselves during the meet,” Lyons said.

Temperatures reached the low 80s Wednesday morning, but humid air hung over the pool. The swimmers from Larchmont tried to stay cool by zipping back to the tree between races.

“It was a combination of getting some food and water from the snack bar and then coming back here and resting,” Lyons said. “Just focusing on the next race and not overtiring themselves.”

But one swimmer, 10-year-old Matthew Mahland, did not even feel the heat despite swimming in two events.

“It wasn’t really bothering me,” Mahland said.

Larchmont sent 12 swimmers to the event Wednesday, including relay teams and individual swimmers.
