Larchmont's Howe Takes First MGA Masters Golf

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Larchmont golfer Robert Howe represented Mamaroneck's Winged Foot Golf Club well Thursday when he shot a 1-over par 71 to capture the first-ever Metropolitan Golf Association Masters Tournament at the Country Club of Fairfield.

Howe, 67, finished four strokes clear of his nearest competitors.

“I’m very honored to have won this,” Howe said. “It’s very important to me, and I’m actually thrilled to win the inaugural event. It makes it even more meaningful.”

Howe's performance was a testimony to his adaptability, winning the tournament on a course he had never seen. The Country Club layout is a par 70 and played at 6,172 yards for the tournament.

“It’s an outstanding golf course, extremely fair, and it was very challenging and enjoyable to play,” Howe said.

Howe’s round included back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and 6, and included only three bogeys in breezy conditions at the waterfront course.

“I really putted well today," Howe said. "I started hitting the ball better on my back nine, and the couple errant shots that I hit I was able to play, so I got a bit lucky too."

The MGA Masters, the first new MGA tournament since 2007, was originally scheduled for September 2011, but was postponed due to the storm damage the Country Club of Fairfield experienced during Tropical Storm Irene.

Other notable Westchester golfers included talk show host Maury Povich of Century Country Club in Purchase, Dick Siderowf of Century, and longtime MGA Director of Rules and Competitions Gene Westmoreland of Winged Foot and Bronxville.
