Larchmont's Sts. John-Paul Takes CYO Hoops Title

LARCHMONT, N.Y. – The Sts. John and Paul junior varsity boys basketball team won the recently completed Westchester/Putnam County Catholic Youth Organization championships.

The core group of SJP Jaguars have been playing together for five years, making the postseason playoffs four times. This was the first time in 25 years that a team comprised of only ninth graders has won the title in the ninth and 10th grade junior varsity division, the first boys basketball title for SJP in 10 years and only the club's second in 20 years.

Led co-captains Patrick Murray, who averaged 20 points per game, and Dean DeLucia, who averaged 15 points, the Jags added 6-foot, 5-inch Brendan Corwin to the roster this year and his impact was felt immediately, as he averaged eight rebounds and five blocked shots per game.

The season began with a loss to Annunciation of Crestwood followed by 15 straight wins, earning the Jags a rematch against the same previously-undefeated Annunciation squad. The game was a back-and-forth battle and SJP trailed by seven points with eight minutes remaining. Corwin fouled out, but Murray and DeLucia showed why they were captains, scoring 15 points and forcing seven turnovers in the final period to forge a 52-46 victory.

Garret Noake, who missed 10 games during the season due to injury, also answered the call by scoring six points in final two minutes to help seal the win.

Coached by Craig Harrigan and assistant coaches Francis Sevean and Darrin Delucia, the team included Jack Harrigan, Marcus Rodrigues, Brendan Corwin, Patrick Murray, Anthony Pecora, Tomas Illanes, Dean DeLucia, Jake Sevean, Carmine Giordono and Garrett Noake.
