PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Mamaroneck boys varsity lacrosse team had a 2012 season to remember as the Tigers, seeded 10th, won the Section 1 Class A championship.
The Tigers were looking to carry that fine play into the Sound Shore Summer Lacrosse League and they did just that, completing the regular season undefeated.
Mamaroneck played Wappingers on Friday for the Westchester County High School title, and despite a 5-4 loss at Purchase College, senior-to-be Scotty Greenberg said the team accomplished its goal.
“Sure we would have liked to win, but that was not the biggest goal of the team,” Greenberg said. “We wanted to make sure nobody was putting their stick down. We played and wanted to get everyone touches. We also wanted to get our younger players touches so that they get accustomed to our offense.”
Mamaroneck fell behind, 5-1, before Greenberg scored his second goal of the game. Then Peter Conley netted consecutive goals, closing the gap with 3:02 remaining in the game.
“They came with their A game, and we didn’t,” Greenberg said.
Mamaroneck did receive a lift when Jake Danehy arrived and stepped in goal. Wappingers did not score a goal against the Colgate-bound Danehy, spanning the final 20 minutes of the game.
“It was a successful summer because we were playing lacrosse and we were having fun,” Greenberg said.
