MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Losses by a combined total of five points in its first two games had Mamaroneck questioning itself. The Tigers were well aware that they could have easily been 2-0, but a combination of factors prevented that. So when Mamaroneck opened its game with Fox Lane on a penalty, negating a Brett Poniros 71-yard touchdown run, the Tigers did not allow themselves to get deflated.Mamaroneck would bounce back and go on to dominate visiting Fox Lane for a 21-0 victory on a rainy Friday night. It was Mamaronecks first victory and helped to erase the bad taste from its first two games.Even though we lost by a total of five points in our first two games, we knew we were a talented team, halfback/defensive back Brett Poniros said. It was just a matter of us putting it all together.Poniros carried 26 times for a game-high 156 yards. Quarterback Parker Thelander completed 13 of 19 passes for 116 yards and a touchdown -- to Will Parkinson -- and he also snuck in from the one-yard-line for a score. The defense registered five sacks of Fox Lane quarterback T.J. Hallock and shut down the Foxes ground game, holding them to minus 17 yards.Monday, we came right out on the practice field and began working hard, Poniros said. This was the best week of practice weve had this season. Everyone was giving 100 percent and flying to the ball in practice.Mamaroneck showed early that it was not going to be deterred. Following the penalty, taking away Poniros long scoring run, the Tigers challenged themselves. It was disheartening that the touchdown got called back, but we thought about what coach (Vitti) told us during the week about not allowing anyone to take our will away, Poniros said.Mamaroneck took a 7-0 lead with 20 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Parkinson capped a seven-play, 57-yard drive, out-leaping the Fox Lane defensive back for the Thelander pass in the end zone. Will wants that ball every single play and we liked the mismatch we had on the outside with single coverage, Poniros said. When Parker throws the ball up there, Will will come down with it.Mamaroneck was seven yards away from a score in the third quarter, but Zach Wolosoff picked off a Thelander pass at the goal line. The Fox Lane cornerback raced down the field and appeared to be on his way for a touchdown, but Thelander charged down the field to make the tackle at the Mamaroneck 30-yard-line.Thelanders tackle would be pivotal. Mamaronecks defense responded by forcing Fox Lane to turn the ball over on downs.Parkers play was all about character and effort, Poniros said. That would be the closest Fox Lane would come to scoring.Hallock completed 10 of 22 passes for 81 yards and Spencer Chernus finished with 36 yards rushing.
