MAMARONECK, N.Y. The Mamaroneck Tigers boys basketball team has not set foot on the floor of the Westchester County Center in 40 years.
Coach Tyrone Carver discussed that fact with his team on Friday.
Playing in a venue, on a stage as big as the Westchester County Center, thats big time, Carver said. We consider the Westchester County Center to be the mecca of high school basketball.
The Tigers will face Brewster on Wednesday at noon in the first round of the Slam Dunk Tournament, which features several local teams in a massive showcase.
Carver said it has been a dream of his, both as a player and now as a coach, to bring a team to the center to compete for a sectional championship. Victories at next weeks tournament would help put the Tigers on the path to realizing that dream.
We have the privilege to be able to play on that floor Its just a huge thing. We dont take it lightly, Carver said.
The Tigers will practice twice at Westchester Community College on Monday and Tuesday to adjust to the court size and depth at the Westchester County Center. Carver said he has yet to talk to his team about the actual environment of the Westchester County Center, but that his team understands the significance of playing at that venue.
As for Wednesdays opponent, Carver said the team is still evaluating film but he expects a tough matchup with a team that shoots the ball well and has a strong interior presence.
Theyre a very well coached team, Carver said. Theyre a good team and well be in for a battle.
