Mamaroneck duo help travel softball team to title

The Empire State Huskies 10-and-under softball team added to what has been an already successful summer by winning the New York State ASA Championship in Albany last weekend.

The team has won five of seven tournaments it has played in this summer and also has a second-place finish. The girls will travel to North Carolina at the end of the month for the PONY Nationals.

One of their titles was at the Jennie Finch Invitational. The team went 0-3 Saturday, then reeled off four wins Sunday, capping it with the title against the top seed. Mamaroneck’s Olivia Martino was selected MVP of the tournament.

The Huskies won the title by beating the top-seeded Miss Shen Flamez, 15-2, finishing 7-1 overall. The previous day, the Miss Shen Flamez beat the Huskies, 10-5.

“It felt good to win because we beat the team that beat us the day before,” said Martino, a sixth-grader-to-be at Rye Neck Middle School. “It was great because everyone knows we are the state champions,” said Alicia Rodriguez, also a sixth-grader-to-be at Rye Neck Middle School.

Martino, Rodriguez and their teammates are now looking forward to North Carolina. “I am excited, especially since we are the only team from New York right now,” Martino said. “It would be amazing if we won.” Rodriguez agrees. “It will be exciting because we are getting to play against the best of the best,” she said.
