Mamaroneck Field Hockey Aims For 5th Straight Title

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Winning has become a tradition with the Mamaroneck varsity field hockey team since 2004, and Rachel Brissette wants the current team to continue it this season.

Mamaroneck opened the first day of practice Monday with a double session. The Tigers met in the morning at Flint Park before resuming at 2 p.m. at the high school.

Mamaroneck won its first Section 1 Class A title and state championship in 2004. The Tigers followed it with another sectional title in 2005 and have won the last four in a row. Mamaroneck played for the state title last year, but was upset by Sachem East in strokes.

“We have a great program and a great reputation,” said Brissette, in her third varsity season. “We want to keep that up.”

Mamaroneck's practice was running smoothly Monday despite the absence of veteran coach John Savage, who was home sick. Mamaroneck assistant and junior varsity field hockey coach Tricia Miller and Jessica Corbin, a 2012 Mamaroneck graduate and field hockey standout, were running the practice.

Along with continuing the tradition established by previous teams, Brissette wants to do so with team chemistry.

“I loved playing with our team last year because we had such good team chemistry,” Brissette said. “Every year the previous team sets the example for the next team. Last year, they set the bar very high, so we want to carry that on.”

Brissette is one of eight seniors returning for Mamaroneck as it goes for a fifth consecutive Section 1 Class A title. Joining Brissette are Hannah Fitzgerald, Kayla Robinson, Darien Ahn, Hope Joyce, Emma Silverman, Liza Stephanz, Sara Mason and Sarah Axelrad.

Brissette said she likes what she has seen from the younger players, many of whom played summer league with the returning varsity team.

“We have a lot of good young players coming up, and that will give us a good mix,” Brissette said. “They can learn from us and we can learn from them.”
