Mamaroneck Field Hockey Opens With Dominant Win

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- The 2012 Mamaroneck varsity field hockey season-opener brought anxious anticipation to the Tigers, who only returned four starters from the Section 1 Class A champion.

Even with seven new starters, including three sophomores, Mamaroneck demonstrated why it is among the elite programs in Section 1 as the Tigers defeated host Fox Lane, 1-0 Wednesday in a Class A field hockey game.

Sophomore Ellie Seide scored her first varsity goal with 10 minutes remaining in the first half, deflecting a pass from veteran senior Kayla Robinson. The goal came on a penalty corner.

“It definitely had a different feel than last year,” aid Robinson, one of the four returning starters. “Last year was a special team with so many talented players.

“We feel we have so much talent this year and today we were working together as a team and coming together as a team.”

Since 2004, Mamaroneck has played in every Section 1 Class A final, winning six, including the last four. The Tigers have also won a state title (’04) and been a finalist four other times.

The tradition established by prior teams is not lost on Robinson and her teammates. She said Mamaroneck’s goal is to return to the state final. Mamaroneck’s performance Wednesday was a great start toward that goal.

Even though it was a one-goal game, Mamaroneck controlled play throughout, especially in the second half when it rang up 10 penalty corners. Mamaroneck also had two goals negated because of fouls in the circle.

“We felt we dominated the game and that made us feel good, especially having the ball down in their circle most of the second half,” Robinson said.

Only the outstanding play of Fox Lane goalie Keely Connors, who made 17 saves in the second half, kept the score close.

Robinson was happy for Seide, who starts alongside her twin sister, Karen. Sophie Despains is the third sophomore starter.

“It was nice for her,” said Robinson of Seide’s goal. “It made her feel good and made her more confident.”
