Mamaroneck Flips Brewster in Slam Dunk Challenge

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Matt Mezansky led all scorers with 23 points, including six key points in the final three minutes to help seal Mamaroneck’s  52-43 victory over Brewster in  a Boys Challenge game of the Slam Dunk Tournament at the Westchester County Center.

Alex Lanni did the tough inside work, adding 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for the Tigers and earning the junior center the Most Valuable Player of the game award.

Mezansky’s timely play had mixed results when he committed two technical fouls in the final minutes contending with Brewster player for loose balls and after whistles had blown. He was disqualified from the game with the Tigers head 48-40.

Mezansky, a senior guard, scored 17 of his points in the first half and the Tigers made 14 of 26 field goal attempts, while holding Brewster to 9 of 24 from the field to take a 33-26 lead. Mamaroneck led 38-30 after three quarters before Brewster came back to even the score at 40-40 with five minutes remaining.

Mamaroneck out-rebounded the Bears 42-21 and made 15 of 20 free throw attempts to Brewster’s 9 of 9 from the line. Brewster missed 9 of its 10 three-point attempts and the Tigers hit 4 of 17 from long range.

Ryan Mahoney led the Bears with 15 points and Brian McNeil added 10.

Gerry McMullin had nine  points and eight rebounds for Mamaroneck and made two key baskets in a third-quarter run that gave the Tigers a 38-30 lead.
