Mamaroneck Football Faces Mount Vernon, Again

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Mamaroneck football closes out the regular season Friday at 7 p.m. hosting a familiar foe – Mount Vernon.

The teams met in week two, and Mamaroneck won. Tigers coach Anthony Vitti said he can never recall two teams playing twice during the regular season when six games count toward seeding in the Class AA playoffs.

Mamaroneck is prepared for a much-improved Mount Vernon team. The 5-1 Tigers have clinched a playoff berth, but another victory would escalate their seed.

“Since week two, Mount Vernon has had an infusion of new talent along their personnel front, which has made them look a little faster to the ball on defense and a little more explosive offensively,” Vitti said. “On the other side, we have also changed since week two. I would like to think we were able to better forge the identity of our team over the past several weeks.”

Vitti said the team is well aware of the game’s importance. In fact, Mamaroneck has been extremely determined since its loss to R.C. Ketcham in week three.

“Since week three we have been playing elimination games, knowing that each and every week, a loss would knock us out of the playoff hunt,” Vitti said. “This game is the final step to achieving this goal. We will be very motivated for this game.”

Mamaroneck is riding a three-game winning streak, including a 34-13 win over archrival Port Chester in week six. Rob Nigro ran for more than 100 yards, including a touchdown, and John Schudy returned a fumble for a score.
