Mamaroneck Football Team Aims For Playoffs

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Mamaroneck varsity football team has adopted its’ team saying for the 2012 season: One More Play.

“We are all about finishing this year because one play, against R.C. Ketcham last year, kept us out of the playoffs,” said senior captain Peter Harris.

The Tigers, who finished 4-5 last year, will open their 2012 regular season at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 at home against Suffern.

Harris, who will start at left tackle on offense and nose guard on defense, said one of Mamaroneck’s goals is to play its’ best football all year.

“Last year, we started playing our best football later in the season,” said the 6-foot-1, 280-pound Harris. “When we beat Fox Lane for our first win, that’s when our whole attitude changed.”

Harris and his teammates do not want a repeat of last year. In order to avoid a sub-.500 year and missing the playoffs, Mamaroneck took a new direction toward its’ off-season work-out program. Instead of going to the weight room and working out individually, like Mamaroneck teams had done in the past, the Tigers followed a program. It was created by assistant coach Jason Washington.

“He gave us the workouts as a team and everyone was working together with it,” Harris said. “Coach (Washington) made sure we were all working, making sure we were staying shape and getting in good playing shape.”

As a result, Harris said, the team was moving faster and got a lot more done on the first day of practice Friday.

Mamaroneck, which has 40 players on varsity, will have to fill the cleats of three impact players – quarterback Parker Thelander, halfback Brett Poniros and wide receiver Will Parkinson. Even though this trio will be missed, Harris knows players are ready to step into these positions.

“We have some outstanding athletes who can come in and do the job, and I have complete confidence in their skills,” Harris said.

Harris, along with his senior classmates, lead Mamaroneck into the season. Returning with Harris are Rob Nigro, Matt Marino, Will Hoffman, Kevin Droesch and Tyler Kruzse, to name a few. Harris also pointed out that the juniors and sophomores on varsity on working hard.

Mamaroneck would like to fast-forward through practice right to the opener.

“Ever since the last snap last year against Mahopac, I have lived for this season,” Harris said. “Everyone is excited about starting the season.”
