The Ivy League-bound Seid sisters, Ellie and Karen, were honored Wednesday during a ceremony with athletic director Bari Suman and head coach John Savage, who said MHS had never won first team All-America honors. The Mamaroneck Tigers won the state field hockey championship in November

Ellie Seid was named first team All-America, ranking her among the top 11 best field hockey players in the nation. Karen Seid was named third team All-America, ranking her among the top 33 field hockey players nationally.

Savage said that Karen Seid's season statistics were weakened after he moved her from attack to midfield to strengthen the team's overall success, concluding that kept her from qualifying for the first or second All-America teams.

While the twins will be apart for the first time in their lives once they enroll in college, they will face each other as Ivy League opponents. Ellie Seid, who also plays the violin, will play field hockey at Brown next fall. Karen Seid, who plays the flute, will play field hockey at the University of Pennsylvania next fall.

To top that, seven seniors from the field hockey team were awarded All-Academic Squad distinction by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. In addition to the Seids, those honorees are: Sophie Despins, Heather Gardiner, Anna Robling, Brianna Steigerwald and Greer Thelander. To achieve these honors, students must maintain an academic average of at least 90, and excel on the field.

"I just put them in. The accomplishments speak for themselves,'' Savage said. "To have two qualify (for All-America) is quite an achievement."

Tricia Miller is the assistant field hockey coach. The team's slogan leading up to the state championship was "unfinished business."

Two Lakeland High School field hockey stars also earned All-America distinction: junior midfielder Dana Bozek was named to the first team; and goalie Alex Halpin made the third team.
