Mamaroneck Girl's Relay Team Wins County Title

ARMONK, N.Y. -- Anima Banks has been enjoying her spring track and field season for Mamaroneck, especially when it comes to the 4x800 relay.

The Duke-bound senior is the elder stateswoman among the quartet, which includes sophomore Leonie Rauls and eighth-graders Shari Rauls and Katie DeVore.

The foursome, led by Banks, ran its finest race of the spring season, clocking in at 9:29 to win the Westchester County 4x800 championship Saturday at Byram Hills. Banks finished off the race, running the anchor leg in 2 minutes, 13 seconds.

“This has been really fun,” said Banks of the spring season. “They are always asking me a lot of questions. I feel like another coach and I enjoy helping the girls out.”

The group ran together during the indoor season and enjoyed success. They have carried it over to the spring. In fact, Mamaroneck won the relay even with DeVore and Leonie Rauls running the 800 earlier in the meet.

Banks, who will continue running at Duke, said the quartet ran the “perfect” race. Mamaroneck took the lead on the opening leg and lengthened it out with each successive leg.

“This feels so good, to win counties, especially with the girls being so young,” Banks said.
