Mamaroneck Holds Off White Plains in Tiger Tussle

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Mamaroneck Tigers played their third game in five days on Wednesday and earned a win against White Plains.

The Tigers of Mamaroneck earned a 47-37 win against the Tigers of White Plains behind Alex Lanni’s 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Mamaroneck (11-6) lost to Mount Vernon on Saturday but beat New Rochelle on Monday. Mamaroneck coach Tyrone Carver Jr. said morale in the locker room is high after the team’s two latest wins against the familiar opponents.

“We’ve been playing them now for at least the last seven years and those are great programs with great coaches that have a ton of success,” Carver said. “We felt as if we could play those guys but it was up to us to prove it and we’ve been able to make some plays down the stretch to seal some nice wins.”

Matt Mezansky scored 10 points and recorded seven assists for Mamaroneck, while Gerry McMullin added 12 points.

Mamaroneck jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter but White Plains (8-9) battled back and eventually tied the game toward the end of the third quarter. But Mamaroneck made a few key baskets in the final minutes to put the game out of reach.

White Plains coach Spencer Mayfield explained why his team fell apart down the stretch.

“Crucial turnovers,” Mayfield said. “We tried to reverse the ball twice and threw it away so they got two wide open layups because of it. And then we had a couple of shooting turnovers where we didn’t execute a play properly and the wrong person ended up with the shot.”

Mayfield said after last week’s loss to New Rochelle that effort should not be an issue for his team at this point in the season. On Wednesday, he said he was pleased with the freshmen on the court and mentioned junior varsity call-up Chris Jordan.

Akeem Williams led White Plains with 14 points and Devon Thomas added 12 points.

Carver has preached recently that he wants his team to play its best basketball as it heads into the postseason. After Wednesday’s game, he said Mamaroneck is peaking at the right time of the season despite the low score.

“We struggled a little bit today offensively, but I feel as if our spirit is where it needs to be,” Carver said. “I feel as if we’re playing hard. I do think that White Plains outworked us tonight. Playing three games in five days is tough, but no excuses. I do feel as if right now we’re probably playing the best basketball we’ve played all year.”
