Mamaroneck Hoops Coach Leads Team In Off-Season

MAMARONECK, N.Y. – The Mamaroneck High School boys basketball team had one of the most successful campaigns in program history last season, and Coach Tyrone Carver Jr. is hoping to keep the momentum going through summer and into next season.

The team played at the Westchester County Center for the first time in 40 years and defeated rival New Rochelle for the first time since 1971. The Tigers ultimately lost to the Huguenots in the first round of the playoffs.

Carver has worked in the gym for the past few months with his players who did not play a spring sport. The team has worked out two to three times a week in an attempt to build on what it accomplished last season despite the loss of key players such as Matt Mezansky and Gerry McMullin.

“We can continue that knowing that we only graduated four guys from the team that we had last year,” Carver said. “Although they were key parts we have to replace, we have a lot to build on.”

One mainstay for the team, who will more than likely be the anchor of the Tigers up front, is Alex Lanni, who will return for his senior season. Carver said he is optimistic about the new blood on the team from the freshman and junior varsity levels.

“I think that we have some very young and capable talent coming up the ranks,” Carver said. “I’m excited about what they can bring to the table.”

Carver said the young players put in the necessary work as freshman and sophomores and should be ready to handle the increased intensity once the regular season begins next fall.

The team will continue to work out throughout the summer. The Tigers attended a team camp at Fordham University in the first week of June and will head to Albright College for another camp July 27. Those camps are in addition to the usual 6 a.m. workout sessions at Mamaroneck High School three times a week.

Carver said the team will not do too much work in August, but added the team must continue to work throughout the year, not just November through February, to be at its best. And he plans to be there every step of the way.

“We are of the mindset if we don’t teach them, someone else will,” Carver said. “We want to constantly have our hands on our players to constantly develop them.”
