WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Mamaroneck High School varsity and junior varsity cheer teams brought a special brand of performance to the 63rd Westchester County Cheerleading Invitational with both teams winning the events Spirit Award for sportsmanship and enthusiasm during the two-day competition Monday and Tuesday.
For the junior varsity team, the event was a learning experience that brought out the best in teamwork in the Junior Varsity competition and added support for the varsity squad during its performance. The junior varsity girls were nearby chanting and adding volume during senior Tigers routine.
Tigers captains Ymani Pettiford, Diana Ortiz, Kristy Miyashita, Solange Sa not only had the most creative names in the competition, but a buoyant enthusiasm that made it easy to understand why they won the Spirit Award.
The competition was fun and exciting to have the new girls on the team with us, Pettiford said. Getting everyone to listen and be together is always the toughest part to get together. We try to support the varsity team as well.
This event is kind of intimidating because there are so many good teams, Sa said. When youre around people you know, its easier.
