RYE, N.Y. — When Mamaroneck and Rye, two of the elite field hockey teams in Section 1, play, the result is usually an excellent game. Monday's game was no exception as the teams played to a 0-0 draw on the Rye turf.

Since 2000, Rye and Mamaroneck have each won six sectional titles. Rye owns four state titles, and Mamaroneck has one.

“There are not many differences, if any, between the two teams,” Mamaroneck’s Kayla Robinson said. “Both teams are highly skilled and evenly skilled, so when we go head-to-head, it is always a good game. And if you let up, even for a minute, one team can come away with the win.”

Mamaroneck had its chances in Rye’s circle, Robinson said. But the host did a good job of defending them, and Rye’s goalie made some nice saves, she said.

Rye rebounded and created scoring opportunities of its own in the second half. But Mamaroneck’s defense, led by goalie Liza Stephanz, played well, Robinson said.

Despite the tie, Mamaroneck walked away an improved team.

“Rye is the competition we expect to see in sectionals,” Robinson said.
