PORT CHESTER, N.Y. -- Port Chester senior Jason Ippolito pointed out that one of the most forgettable moments of the varsity football team’s 2011 season was the loss to arch-rival Mamaroneck.
The Tigers raced out to a big lead and went on to a lopsided win. The Rams do not want a repeat of last year as the they host the Tigers at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
This will be the 86th meeting of the rivalry, dating back to 1920. Port Chester leads the series 46-34-5, but the teams have split the last 10 meetings. The winner receives the Anthony “Zimbo” Zimbalatti-Leroy “Roy” O’Neill trophy, named in honor of the former Port Chester and Mamaroneck athletic directors, respectively.
Both teams enter the game off victories and with 4-1 records. The winner will clinch a playoff berth in their respective class.
“I don’t think we will play a game that has ever been so important,” Ippolito said. “It’s not about the trophy; we just want to be the ones to pull off the win.”
Mamaroneck senior Rob Nigro concurs.
“The Mamaroneck-Port Chester game is a rivalry that has been played since 1920 and it has always been the most competitive game of every season.,” he said. “We played a great game last year, but we know we will have to play well again on both sides of the ball in order to get the win.”
