Mamaroneck Rally Falls Short in 8-5 Loss

MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. - The Mamaroneck versus the combined squads of Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville ice hockey series has been one-sided the past few years, according to Eagles’ forward Mark Luciano.

“In the past four or five games, they have straight out whipped us,” said Luciano, a senior at Eastchester High School. “I think they have outscored us something like 34-5.”

And even though Mamaroneck, usually a perennial Section 1 Division I finalist, is only one game over .500 this season, the Eagles were not overlooking the Tigers.

“They have a great coach and are a great team so we knew this was not going to be an easy game,” Luciano said.

The Eagles pulled away from the Tigers with a surge in the second period of an 8-5 win on Senior Night at the Ice Hutch on Friday.

Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville won for the sixth consecutive game and improved to 14-3 this season. The Eagles have three regular-season games remaining - New Rochelle, Mount Pleasant and White Plains - before the Section 1 Division I Championships.

Ian Palfrey and Luciano registered hat tricks and Angus McLean added two goals in his second game back from injury. The three seniors, along with their teammates, were honored before the game.

Eastchester/Tuckahoe/Bronxville coach Dave O’Neill said this is the team’s first win over Mamaroneck during his six-year tenure.

The score was even at 3-3 two minutes into the second period after Luciano and Mamaroneck’s Chris Leblanc traded goals 26 seconds apart. The Eagles would take the lead, for good, at the 8:17 mark as Luciano and Palfrey collaborated on the goal.

Palfrey, skating down the left wing, fed Luciano in front. He feathered a pass right back to Palfrey, who stopped and tucked the puck inside the post for a 4-3 lead. Two minutes later, McLean scored twice in a 10-second span. McLean’s return makes the line of Palfrey, Luciano and McLean difficult to defend.

“Getting the lead back definitely felt good, especially having Angus get those two goals,” Luciano said. ’Having Angus back makes a difference on our team.”

Mamaroneck (9-8) closed the gap to two, at 7-5, on goals by Peter Conley (second period) and Teddy Belllis (third period). The Tigers had a power play with five minutes remaining in the game, but Frankie Sherding, Palfrey, Luciano and McLean successfully killed it off, and 20 seconds later Palfrey completed his hat trick.

Conley finished with two goals and an assist for Mamaroneck.
