MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- One of the major factors in the Mamaroneck varsity football team’s 3-1 start has been the play of first-year starting quarterback Danny McCarthy.
The senior has stepped up to take over where three-year starter and 2012 graduate Parker Thelander concluded. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound McCarthy has played with the poise of a veteran instead of a rookie starter.
“Parker was a great quarterback who had great mechanics and threw the ball really well,” McCarthy said. “I wanted to improve my mechanics and get to the level Parker was at last year.”
McCarthy threw two touchdown passes in Mamaroneck’s 18-6 win over Ramapo in week four. He connected with Matt Marino on a 73-yarder and his 14-yard strike to Will Hoffman gave Mamaroneck a lead going into halftime.
Though McCarthy was the favorite to become the starter this season, he did not consider it a given. McCarthy prepared by having an excellent summer.
“Coach Vitti said that all the positions were open,” McCarthy said. “I received a lot of work with the receivers and as a team in three 7-on-7s at New Canaan, Stepinac and White Plains.”
As a result of these workouts, McCarthy showed Vitti and the staff that he was ready to direct the offense.
“Danny is a great athlete who has a big arm and moves well,” Vitti said. “Danny is also very intelligent and he understands the flow of our offense. Most importantly, he is humble and does what it takes for this team to win.”
McCarthy credits Rob Nigro and Marino and his offensive line with his success.
“When you have two big threats like Rob Nigro and Matt Marino, and many more, it is such a help to me,” McCarthy said. “We’re well-balanced on offense and it starts with our offensive line. They get the push when we run and they always have good blocking when we pass.”
