McCarthy's TD Passes Give Mamaroneck Football Win

HILLBURN, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck faced a challenge in the second quarter of its Section 1 Class AA football game with Ramapo Friday.

The Gryphons answered the Tigers’ touchdown with one of their own to even the score. However, Mamaroneck had the last word, scoring just before halftime and going on to an 18-6 win at Torne Valley Sports Complex.

Mamaroneck improved to 3-1 and will host Carmel, also 3-1, Friday at 4:30 p.m. The winner of this game will strengthen its grip on a Section 1 Class AA play-off berth.

Danny McCarthy threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to Will Hoffman with three minutes remaining in the second quarter to give the Tigers a 12-6 lead. Earlier in the quarter, McCarthy and Matt Marino combined on a 73-yard scoring strike.

“We called this redemption week,” Mamaroneck coach Anthony Vitti said. “We were not happy with our showing last week. We chose to focus less on Ramapo and more on us. We wanted to fix some of the mistakes we made last week.”

Vitti said the touchdown before halftime was a huge lift.

“You could see it in the players’ eyes as they came off the field that they were energized,” he said. “We knew that was big because they were getting the ball first in the second half.”

Mamaroneck’s defense halted Ramapo in the second half. Vitti said the staff made an adjustment at halftime and it resulted in the Tigers’ second-half success.

Marquez Jacksonp-Allen finished out Mamaroneck’s scoring with a touchdown in the fourth quarter.
