Morris hoped for another scoring opportunity and this time, he buried a shot with 2:55 remaining. The goal lifted Mamaroneck over Scarsdale, 3-2 in a Section 1 hockey game at Murray’s Ice Rink.

The goal capped a Mamaroneck rally from a 2-0 deficit after the first period.

Two minutes prior to his eventual decisive goal, Morris skated across the ice, right to left, all alone on Marinelli. Morris faked right, pulled the puck to his backhand and went for the lower left corner, but Marinelli got his right toe on it.

“He made a great save and after that I definitely wanted another quality scoring opportunity so I could step up for the team,” Morris said.

Trey Herlitz-Ferguson set up Morris, leading a 2-on-1. Herlitz-Ferguson drew the defenseman to him and found Morris in the high slot. Once he released the puck, Herlitz-Ferguson got knocked to the ice by a Scarsdale defenseman.

Mamaroneck peppered Marinelli with shots throughout the game as the Tigers outshot the Raiders, 37-24. However, Marinelli made numerous excellent saves.

“Their goalie played great,” Morris said. “We stayed persistent the whole game, though. We kept pressure on them and we wanted to wear down their defense. We knew that good things would happen if we kept putting pucks on net.”

Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli was happy to see Morris score the game-winner.

“Robert did a great job,” Chiapparelli said. “He’s been working really hard to get his opportunities and I was happy he got one.”

Peter Conley scored Mamaroneck’s first goal in the second period and three minutes later assisted on Ted Bellis’ equalizer.

James Nicholas gave Scarsdale a 1-0 lead at the 6:46 mark of the first period and 56 seconds later, younger brother Stephen Nicholas snapped in a wrist shot.
