Orienta Beach Club's Egan sets County Swim Record

RYE, N.Y. -- In Liam Egan’s first time this summer swimming the 200 Individual Medley, the 13-year-old came away with two shining moments Tuesday. Egan, of Orienta Beach Club, won the event and in doing so, established a new record at the 86th annual Westchester County Swimming Championships at Playland Pool.

Swimming will resume Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and will conclude Thursday. Egan came in with a time of 2:8.37, shattering the former mark of 2:10.23 set in 1994 by Eric Mitchell of Anita Louise Ehrman.

“I went out strong and tried to keep it up but I didn’t think I was going to be able to do it,” said Egan, an eighth-grader-to-be at Rye Middle School in September. “After the breaststroke I still didn’t feel good, but in the freesyle, I was relaxed and just kept kicking.”

Egan, who won the 12-and-under 50-yard freestyle and butterfly in record times, was happy to get this victory and record.

“What makes this special is that it might be the last year the meet is here at Playland,” said Egan, who has been swimming in the county since he was seven.
