MAMARONECK, N.Y. – Peter Conley had to make a choice when it came to the winter sport he would play his freshman year at Mamaroneck High School.

Would Conley continue with basketball or hockey? He chose to stay with hockey, and it resulted in an outstanding career.

Conley closed out his four-year varsity career with an excellent year and has been named The Mamaroneck Daily Voice February Student-Athlete of the Month.

The Georgetown-bound Conley was second on the team with 24 goals and 44 points. He scored a short-handed goal, giving Mamaroneck a 2-1 lead in the Section1 Division 1 title game against Suffern.

“I played CYO basketball for my dad for six years and also played modified basketball in seventh and eighth grade,” said Conley, who will play lacrosse at Georgetown. “I knew it was going to be tough to decide which sport to play.

“I remember going to the varsity games when I was a kid, and I knew about the tradition the hockey program had. I remember standing outside the locker room, looking up to all of the varsity guys.”

Even though Conley enjoyed basketball, he began playing hockey at age 5. He grew up at the Hommocks Ice Rink, Mamaroneck hockey’s home ice, and played with many of his current teammates. The high-scoring forward began as a defenseman and was paired with classmate Trey Herlitz-Ferguson. Conley laughed when he related the story of his defenseman days with Herlitz-Ferguson.

“When I started playing travel hockey, when I was 8, that’s when I really loved it,” Conley said.

Mamaroneck coach Mike Chiapparelli loved having Conley on the team. “Peter was a consistent scorer, great leader, a great defensive player and one of our captains,” Chiapparelli said. “Hockey is his second sport.”

Conley said he enjoyed playing for Chiapparelli and said he will remember the friendships he developed with his teammates over the years.

The  student athlete of the month is chosen by the sports reporters and editors of The Daily Voice.
