After taking the first two games from the Canadiens on the road, the Rangers return home Friday night in hopes of inching closer to the Stanley Cup final, which has Finn excited.
“It’s a good feeling to see them do well,” he said.
Finn grew up in Larchmont and attended Maloney Brothers hockey camp at the Playland ice rink in the 1980s. He spent the last 10-plus years in Birmingham, AL working at Wells Fargo.
He recently returned to his hometown as his father got sick. He said hockey doesn’t hold much weight down in Alabama, so he stopped following it. But, he started up again when he returned home in November 2013.
The Rangers bounced back in the last round against the Pittsburgh Penguins, taking the series in seven games, which gave some fans in Mamaroneck hope they can take that momentum to beat the Canadiens two more times to advance to the Stanley Cup finals.
That effort begins with game three Friday night.
Larchmont resident Tim, who chose not to give his last name, said he would be attending at Madison Square Garden.
“I think they will be in the finals,” he said. “After that, I don’t know. If you’re in it you have a chance.”
Finn said he may be watching at Molly Spillane’s in Mamaroneck, which offers free “Blue Crew” shots every time the Rangers score. The bar’s manager, Billy Brembs, said the Rangers Stanley Cup prospects have, and will likely continue to drive business.
“I think this year we’ve seen a surge as far as hockey fans, with the momentum they have,” he said.
Brembs said he expects a good crowd for the game Friday night and that, if the Rangers win the series, “you’re going to see a huge surge in business.”
Anthony Mangeli, of Yonkers, stopped in at Molly Spillane’s Thursday night and said he will likely be watching on television. However, he had season tickets the last time the Rangers were in contention for the Stanley Cup in 1994 and attended all of their home games in the finals that year.
“There’s no better place to watch hockey than in the Garden,” he said.
