Rowing Gold Medalist Meets Mamaroneck Fans

Susan Francia, a gold medalist from the Women's 8+ at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and four- time World Champion, will speak and hold a meet and greet at the Equinox Fitness Center in Mamaroneck on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. US Rowing and Equinox recently formed a partnership to support the US Olympic team. This fundraiser will support the US Olympic Rowing team and the suggested donation is $25.

Francia, who is currently vying for a slot on the 2011 National Team and is also training for London 2012, will talk about her Olympic journey and discuss training, nutrition and how the team is preparing for upcoming international competition. On June 27, Francia and her teammates depart to compete in the Royal Henley Regatta outside of London and the World Cup III in Lucerne Switzerland.

Francia has been competing as an elite rower, almost from the beginning of her rowing career , starting as a walk-on to the University of Penn rowing team her sophomore year. After graduating from Penn in 2004 with a B.A. in Criminology and MS in Sociology, she entered the USRowing system and won her first World Championship Medal – a bronze, in the Womens's 8+. Since then her results have been remarkable.

She went on to make the 2008 Olympic Team where she again won gold in the 8+. In 2009 Susan won Gold Medals both in the Women's 2- and 8+ events at the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan, Poland. This was the first time in US Rowing history that the W2- pair has won the Gold Medal in an international championship, much less two Gold Medals in two very challenging Olympic events in the same year at the same regatta. She was a gold medalist again in 2010 when she won again with the US Women's 8+ at the World Championships.

Susan and her pair partner, Erin Cafaro, were awarded 2009 FISA World Crew of the Year for their performances at the World Rowing Championships, as well as being named USA Today's Athletes of the Month. Erin was also awarded the US Rowing Female Athlete of the Year award for 2010 by her teammates and coaches on the US Rowing National Team.

In support of the partnership, Equinox is pleased to offer a free one week trial membership to the community and will donate $50 to the US Rowing National Team for every person who registers online and brings their pass into one of the 25 Equinox Clubs in the New York/Connecticut metro area.

Equinox Mamaroneck is located at 1053 West Boston Post Road, Mamaroneck. Please RSVP, if you know in advance, to
